It has been an honor to serve as your principal for the last five years and I am excited about serving again this year. I am constantly amazed at the positive progress our students have made academically. Our teachers have worked extremely hard to deliver a much more rigorous curriculum for preparing all our students for post-secondary training, and it is working.
Five years ago, we challenged our teachers to more 80% of students toward college readiness. In the 2013-2014 school year, we were only preparing 30% of our students for college and most our folks thought 80% was just a lofty dream, which could not be obtained.
I am proud to share that our graduating class of 2018 received their diploma with 90% of them eligible to attend college. This does not happen just because we stated we wanted it to happen. No, this happens because teachers, students and parents deicide they could do it.
We still have a lot of work to do as we realize that college readiness starts at Pre-K. Together we will continue to produce a graduate we all can be proud of.
Michael R. Casteel, Principal
I am looking forward to a wonderful year at Greenback School! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work in my home community, and to be at a unique PreK-12 school. My teaching experience includes 5 years teaching in Knox County, 7 years teaching at Loudon Elementary School in Loudon County, and teaching art and piano lessons. This year will mark my 8th year as an Assistant Principal in Loudon County.
I live with my husband, D.J. in beautiful Greenback, TN. My husband is a wonderful 5th grade teacher at LES, and my amazing mother taught school for many years. So, public education is a very important part of my life. When I am not at work I enjoy training to run in 5K, 10K and half marathon races, traveling, knitting, writing, baking, reading, and watching stunning East Tennessee sunsets across the field in my yard.
Please look for me at school, or contact me by phone or email any time throughout the school year with ideas, suggestions, or concerns so that we can work together to make this a truly successful year for our students.
