Course: Wellness

Goals:  To give students a better understanding of health and physical related issues and how to implement strategies to allow for a healthier lifestyle.

             Physical Education — shorts/sweatpants, tennis shoes


Grading: 

65% - assessment, formative and summative.
          15% - final
          20% - dressing-out and cooperative activities

GENERAL PHYSICAL EDUCATION RULES

  • After roll call students will be dismissed by the teacher to go to the locker rooms to change for class.
  • Students will be given 10 minutes to change and use the restroom before and after the class activity. After changing, students will report back to their designated area and remain seated for instruction.
  • Showering is encouraged, as well as using deodorant and having clean clothes.
  • Gym clothing must be appropriate. No short-shorts, belly shirts, spaghetti strap tops, shirts with inappropriate pictures or language will be allowed (must meet school dress code). All undergarments must be completely covered. This includes sports bras.
  • Clothes worn to school that day are not permitted for gym class attire. Students will be sweating and need to have a change of clothing.
  • Students must have tennis shoes for gym class. Sandals, boots and sock feet are not allowed for safety purposes. If you do not have tennis shoes, you cannot participate and will receive a minus 20 points for participation for the day.
  • Students may not bring food or drinks in the gym. This will be strictly enforced!
  • Student’s grades are determined by daily points. Students receive 20 points per day and may have points deducted for lack of effort during exercise and/or activities.
  • Notes from home are not accepted within reason. Doctor’s notes are accepted, as well as documentation from a hospital visit. If a student becomes ill before leaving home, a parent/guardian must call the school 856-3028 ext.2560 and leave a return phone number to verify the illness if it prohibits or limits the student‘s participation for the day.
  • Students are not allowed outside the gymnasium at any time without supervision.
  • Students from other classes are not permitted in the gym for any reason unless indicated by the administration.
  • Students will not disrespect or harass any other student for any reason. If this occurs, the teacher needs to be notified immediately. Disrespect and/ or insubordination toward the teacher will not be tolerated.
  • Physical Education is a required class and should be recognized and respected as any other core class.
  • Any misuse of the facility will be reported to the administration and disciplinary action will be taken.

 

 

 

  • The teacher and students have reviewed this sheet together. Students will sign below, indicating that he/she understands the policies and the outcomes of compliance and non-compliance. Parents/Guardians will sign below indicating that the rules have been read and agreed upon. These rules provide consistency in the classroom and are intended to provide a safe, non-threatening learning environment for your child. This signed sheet will be placed in the student’s portfolio and copies will be posted in the gymnasium and locker rooms for referral. Please have your child return this form the next school day.

Course: General Physical Education

Text: N/A

Course Description and Focus: Students will review skill components of various sports and activities, learn new activities, complete a series of required fitness assessment testing and focus on lifetime activities and healthy lifestyles.

Course Goals: The following list of course goals will be addressed and are directly related to the content standards. (* Designates a crucial goal)

  • Participate in lifetime fitness activities *
  • Assess the relationship of physical activity to the quality of life
  • Analyze the relationship between physical activity and the prevention of specific diseases
  • Use physical activity as a means of self expression
  • Emphasize enjoyable participation in physical activities that are relevant to students *
  • Offer a diverse range of noncompetitive and competitive activities appropriate for different ages and abilities *
  • Allow all students to successfully participate
  • Provide appropriate and authentic assessment as part of the learning process
  • Reduce anxiety and stress
  • Teach cognitive concepts and knowledge through activity
  • Follow scope and sequence in skill acquisition
