1. Parents and guardians, I want to thank you for your work this first semester in helping us improve our student attendance rate. Last year, Greenback School had the worst attendance rate among all Loudon County schools. Compared to last year, and at this same point in the school year, we have improved by 9%! Keep up the good work!!

2. Today, students and staff participated in an armed intruder drill. These drills are required to take place at least once per school year. Everyone did a great job.

3. High school seniors have a mandatory TN Promise meeting on Thursday of this week. The meeting will take place at 1:15 PM. Seniors must let Mrs. Moffett know if they are unable to attend.

4. Next Tuesday, November 25, during the high school basketball games, our kindergarten class will participate in the annual Turkey Tango! The Turkey Tango will take place at half-time of the girls’ game. Students need to be at the school by 6 PM.

5. There is no school next Wednesday through Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday. Our last day before the break is Tuesday, November 25, and school resumes on Monday, December 1.

6. The annual Santa Shop will open for students on Dec. 1 and run through Dec. 5. Teachers have signed their classes up for visits. Proceeds from the Santa Shop benefit the Greenback School yearbook.

7. Parents & guardians, our school no longer has a clothing closet with extra clothing items. If your child is prone to needing a change of clothes here at school, you need to provide those items. You can simply send your child’s extra clothing items in their backpack.

8. For planning purposes, our high school EOC exams (End of Course exams) will begin the week of December 2. EOCs will be given through December 15.

9. Please make your child’s teacher and/or the main office aware if you are changing how your child is getting home in the afternoon. We want to ensure that each child gets where they are supposed to be at the end of the school day.

11. The high school basketball season kicks off this week with three pre-season (Hall of Fame) games. Our high school teams travel to Eagleton tomorrow afternoon, then to Gatlinburg Pittman on Thursday afternoon. The boys’ team will host a Hall of Fame game this Friday night against Apostolic Christian Academy. That game begins at 7:30 PM. Our middle school basketball teams have two home games this week. They host Rural Vale tomorrow afternoon and then host Dayton this Thursday. Both games are district games. Our elementary basketball teams will play at Loudon this coming Saturday, Nov. 22 at 12:20 PM.

1. We will have parent-teacher conferences this Thursday, November 13. Call the main office to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teacher. Meeting times are scheduled in 20-minute blocks.

2. Because of parent-teacher conferences, there will be NO afterschool LAUNCH activities on Thursday, November 13. Make sure your child is picked up from school at regular dismissal time on this date.

3. Some of our students who are enrolled in a CTE construction class will be participating in the BXTN building competition this Thursday, Nov. 13 in Knoxville. These students will take a bus from the school to the competition. Signed permission forms are required in order for students to attend this competition.

4. This Friday, Nov. 14 is a hat day! For a $1 donation, students can wear a hat during the school day. Proceeds from this fundraiser benefit the Jerry Masingo scholarship fund.

1. This Thursday, Oct. 30, students in grades PreK-5 will participate in the annual Cherokee STOMP! This yearly fundraiser helps generate funds for things like student incentives, technology, online learning programs, and individual classroom/grade level needs. Make sure all pledge forms and donations are turned in as soon as possible. All donations must be in by Nov. 7. Parents & grandparents are welcome to come and cheer on your child during their designated time.

2. Also on Thursday, Oct. 30, a representative from Girls Scouts of America will host a parent informational meeting for anyone interested in learning more about participating in Girls Scouts. The meeting will take place at 6 PM in the school cafeteria.

3. Tonight, our high school boys’ basketball program is sponsoring a new event. There will be gift baskets available through a silent auction beginning at 5:30, and then a Cherokee alumni basketball game beginning at 7:30 PM. Admission is $5 and concessions will be sold.

4. Parents & guardians, our school no longer has a clothing closet with extra clothing items. If your child is prone to needing a change of clothes here at school, you need to provide those items. You can simply send your child’s extra clothing items in their backpack.

5. This Friday is Halloween. Students are allowed to wear their costumes to school, but all costumes MUST comply with the school’s dress code. Students who wear a costume that violates the dress code will have to call home for a change of clothes. Please take time to review the dress code in our student handbook which can be found on the school website. Masks are not permitted. Hats are only permitted if they are a part of the costume.

6. PreK and Kindergarten students will be on a field trip this Friday, Oct. 31. They will visit Deep Well Farm in Lenoir City. Parents who are planning to attend must first stop by the school and pick up visitors’ badge. Make sure to bring your driver's license if this is your first time getting a visitors’ badge. If you are already in the system, please call the school this week and the front office can have your badge printed and ready to pick up.

7. This week’s high school football game will be played on Thursday night, Oct. 30 at Rockwood. Kick-off is at 7:30.

1. Thanks to everyone who donated to the WBIR 10Tailgate food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. Our school won the contest with Oakdale, in both categories! Greenback generated well over $2,000 in the online giving and we donated over 1,000 pounds of food donations. So, thank you again for your support, not only for our school competition, but in serving families in need across east Tennessee.

2. The school library is hosting the Scholastic Book Fair this week! Teachers have signed up for a time for their students to visit. The book fair runs through the end of this week.

3. Letters were sent home last week with our students in grades PreK through 5 about this year’s Cherokee STOMP! Good afternoon, this is Matt Brookshire, principal at Greenback School, and here are your weekly updates for the week of October 13, 2025.

1. I hope that everyone had a nice fall break last week. We are excited to have everyone back as we get the 2nd grading period underway!

2. Report cards for the 1st grading period will be sent home with students this Thursday, Oct. 16.

3. Many of our students are taking their common assessments this week. The common assessments are district tests that help to measure student progress toward mastery at this point in the school year. The tests provide us with important data about student progress, so encourage your child to do their very best work!

4. Greenback School is excited to participate in the WBIR 10Tailgate food drive for Second Harvest Food Bank. Donations of canned and boxed food items can be dropped off at the school, and online monetary donations can be made on behalf of Greenback School by using the QR code found on the school’s website.

5. Greenback School will recognize those high school seniors who participated in a fall sport/activity this Friday night, Oct. 17, during the Greenback v. Oakdale home football game. The senior football players will be recognized before the game, and all other senior participants will be recognized during halftime. This is also a “pink-out” game for Greenback fans.

6. This Friday, Oct. 17 is the deadline for PreK and Kindergarten students to turn in a permission form for their field trip to Deep Well Farm on Halloween Day!

Second Harvest Food Bank is thrilled to partner with WBIR’s 10Tailgate and Greenback School in support of the 213,970 food insecure persons in East Tennessee.  Your food bank operates with 95.3% efficiency which means that $0.95 of each dollar goes directly towards our hunger relief programs!  Please know that support (food and funds) provided here, stays here to help those in our 18-county service area who are challenged by food insecurity.  Food drive barrels and boxes will be dropped at GBS for your weekly 10Tailgate Challenge.  Food collections will be picked up, weighed and then converted into meals.  The more weight provided, the further the impact for our neighbors.
